Web squared

The most important idea from the “Web Squared” article, is that the internet is growing. As it gets older, it has more and more information. We are helping to provide that information by using the various applications that both give and take information from us. Real time feedback is becoming more prevalent, with users sharing information with each other, as opposed to only coming from one source. Businesses are having to keep up with the on-the-go mobile consumer. I don’t know exactly what my future career will be. I would love to make a career out of my photography, and the articles that we have been reading are making me realize that to be up to date, there needs to be more than just the photography session, and returning of the photographs. It would be ideal to have an almost flickr-like set up where customers could view their photos, and have their friends view them, and give feedback, and be able to decide what photos they like best, and what edits they would like to be made.

My current favorite web application, if it counts as such, is Netflix on demand. I have always been very into movies, and for a small fee (or free for me, since I use my brother’s instant stream) a whole new world of legal viewing is opened up. I cannot name how many movies I have seen that I probably would never pick out of a movie store. The reviews are also helpful in deciding which film to watch. I like that by rating which movies you like and don’t like, you get custom recommendations, as well as custom ratings on the movies themselves. While it’s not what I would consider the most groundbreaking thing to come online, it’s definitely one of the most fun for me.

  1. Netflix is also my favorite right now. Over winter break i got somewhat addicted to it because my GF does not have a tv in her house. We spend time watching movie and shows online. After that, i downloaded an app for my droid to watch movies when i was flying back home =D

  2. The idea of having something like a flikr account and allowing people to give you feedback, advice, and comments on your photographs seems like a great idea. However, I feel that you would only want to do that when you first start out with your career to get new ideas that you can build on. As time goes you should find your own photographic/ editing style and techniques. It will set you apart from the rest, and make people remember your work! :)

  3. I am also a huge fan of Netflix and the ability to stream online. When I was home over break, I was able to stream on my TV by using a bluray device. It was so cool that I could add movies to the account from my laptop, and the movies would just show up on the screen. It takes a lot to surprise me these days in terms of technology, but some things don't cease to amaze me. I think that Netflix could also be a great example when working with the idea of "the long tail" because though several new releases are available to rent by mail, a lot of the streaming movies are older which allows users to revisit or watch movies they never thought of before, and in turn, gaining Netflix some more business.

  4. Yes, Netflix was extremely addicting for me because of how easy you can access movies online. Through having Netflix for only a few months, I ended up watching more movies and series than I ever care to admit. Netflix has such a wide variety they can hit every type of person's likes which is made possible through the scoring of other movies. It's doing what other movie stores can't do which is why they are all suffering. To top it all off, Netflix doesn't even have a physical store location to visit; It's all online showing how impacting the internet is.

  5. Nice coverage of the article, and great connections between your future goals and the key points from the piece. The data Netflix uses from what you watch (and rate, if you do) is very much a web squared way of doing things. This will become even more clear in the Weinberger reading (data data everywhere, how do we organize it?).

  6. I also enjoy the benefits of netflix, especially since its a lot cheaper then cable. And I've discovered a lot of new stuff that I'd never had thought of to look at as a result of their feedback system.
I also like the connection that you made between the reading and your career. A flikr like setup does seem the most optimal, and i for one would like to see your work in sch a way.
